A Meaningful HIMSS for MEDHOST

As we approach the midpoint of 2009, I’ve been reflecting on many things, including MEDHOST’s experience at this year’s HIMSS. Here are some verbatim comments made by attendees who saw demos of our EDIS, self check-in kiosk and healthcare dashboard prototype:

“Wow!”

“Your user interface is light years ahead of anything else.”

“This product will dramatically impact how our organization works and provide a means for culture changes.”

“You are solving the problem of throughput.”

“I didn’t know this could be done.”

That’s some pretty meaningful feedback. At HIMSS, we consistently heard clinicians and hospital staff talking about their challenges. Many described how difficult their information systems are to use and how they see little improvement in communication and workflow. But, it was clear that they saw something different in MEDHOST – an EDIS that was designed by clinicians, not software developers, so that users have a system that supports their needs, processes and workflow. Bottom line, MEDHOST is dedicated to providing solutions that are designed for the user and that really work.

So, what should hospitals expect from their information systems? The most important aspect of an information system is its usability. Usability drives adoption. With clinician adoption hospitals can actually reap the inherent benefits of their IT systems such as increased patient safety, improved communication, streamlined processes and revenue enhancements. Simply put, a system can’t be meaningful if no one’s using it.

Our intuitive user interface is just one reason why MEDHOST is different, but it’s a big driver of compliance – all MEDHOST Customers cite high adoption rates, with many boasting 100 percent clinician compliance. After implementing MEDHOST, Customers consistently reduce ED wait times and turnaround times, improve charge capture and gross revenue, grow patient satisfaction scores, and achieve ROI within six to 12 months. As the hospital’s front door, the ED affects the entire facility, so a smoothly operating and profitable ED helps improve the hospital’s overall workflow and financial performance.

At MEDHOST, we continue to push the user experience envelope. We recently released ED PASS, a patient self-check in kiosk for the ED, and version 4.2, which takes physician usability and satisfaction to the next level. MEDHOST also is extremely active with Microsoft, and as a Microsoft Partner since 1999 and a Gold Certified Partner since 2007, we have collaborated to create one of the first multi-touch business intelligence dashboards for healthcare. This year we expanded the prototype to include rich Web-based features. using Microsoft Silverlight and were one of a few Independent Software Vendors chosen to demonstrate technology in Microsoft’s booth at HIMSS. The demo sparked lots of attention from both attendees and the news media – check out the Healthcare IT News article and video about our demo on Micrsoft's Surface.

As mentioned, MEDHOST continues to focus on developing solutions that are easy to use and create the best user experience. We’re dedicated to advancing healthcare IT and setting technology and usability standards that will improve patient care and safety.
