University of Virginia Health System Implements MEDHOST EDIS to Improve ED Operations and Promote Patient Safety

Automating processes streamlines workflow, improves communication and patient care

ADDISON, Texas – March 3, 2009 – MEDHOST, provider of the leading Emergency Department Information System (EDIS), today announced that one of the longest standing medical facilities in the U.S., the University of Virginia (UVA) Health System in Charlottesville, Va., automated its emergency department (ED) with MEDHOST. The Level 1 Trauma Center receives more than 60,000 patient visits a year and selected MEDHOST due to its ease of use, rich functionality and proven results. Since going live with MEDHOST, the ED has experienced improved workflow, better communication among clinicians and more complete documentation of patient information which resulted in increased patient safety and timely, high quality patient care.

MEDHOST enables UVA’s ED clinicians to quickly and accurately document patient information and access decision support tools at the bedside, leading to more informed care providers and increased patient safety. ED leaders also cited higher compliance with regulatory standards and noted that clinicians spend less time searching for patient information because records are available electronically.

“We selected MEDHOST because of its ease of use, robust physician and nursing documentation, and because of its seamless interface with other systems in our hospital’s Lab and Radiology departments and with Centricity/E-Care,” said Robert E. O’Connor, M.D., M.P.H., Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at UVA Health System.  “Our team looked at many EDIS vendors and chose to implement MEDHOST because of its proven track record and high staff acceptance rates. We are excited to begin work to achieve the same positive results.”

With MEDHOST’s EDIS, the UVA Health System eliminated manual processes and heightened the security of patient information. MEDHOST’s rich functionality and intuitive design has streamlined workflow with automated alerts which notify clinicians when orders need to be filled, when patients need to be transferred to a different department or when ambulance patients need to be registered – all of which has decreased overall turnaround time. Staff and clinicians at all experience levels– from students and interns to residents, attending physicians and specialists – can easily work within MEDHOST, and each caregiver’s documentation is automatically initialed and time stamped. This has enabled a better review of the progression of care, streamlined management and teaching efforts, and greatly enhanced communication, all critical to the success of a teaching hospital.

“MEDHOST is improving ED operations and fixing many of the processes that lead to breakdowns in EDs across the U.S. so that patients receive timely and quality care,” said Craig Herrod, president and CEO of MEDHOST. “We are excited to work with one of the nation’s leading health systems and teaching facilities to further enhance its operations with our advanced technology. The University of Virginia Health System joins more than 100 of our full suite Customers and we congratulate them on their rapid success.”

MEDHOST currently serves more than 160 facilities, including the Baylor Healthcare System in Texas, Catholic Healthcare West in California, Catholic Health System in New York and Tenet Healthcare Corporation. MEDHOST is the preferred EDIS provider of VHA Inc., a national cooperative serving more than 2,400 not for profit healthcare organizations.  MEDHOST easily integrates with leading hospital information systems, including MEDITECH, Cerner, Siemens and McKesson.
