Exploring Generative AI for EHR Innovation

On March 27, 2025, MEDHOST’s Pandian Velayutham participated in a focused AWS meetup tailored for technical builders—those working hands-on to develop and refine products, with a focus on generative AI. As the sole EHR presenter in a group primarily composed of tech-forward innovators, MEDHOST shared insights into current strategy, challenges, and future ambitions in the evolving healthcare IT landscape.

Simplifying Clinical Complexity with Generative AI

A key theme from Pandian’s presentation was the opportunity to simplify and enhance the provider experience using generative AI. One highlighted challenge was the overload of Continuity of Care Documents (CCDs). With providers receiving numerous CCDs through integrations with platforms like Health Gorilla or CommonWell, the volume of data can quickly become overwhelming.

Pandian discussed how even though accessing these documents is straightforward, digesting and reconciling their content remains a pain point for physicians. The solution? A generative AI-powered feature that can summarize multiple CCDs into a single, concise paragraph while linking back to the original source.

Peer Insights That Sparked Inspiration

There were also presentations from other organizations. One standout example was a company exploring how generative AI can elevate patient call center experiences. Their solution gathers patient data before a call and presents it to nurses or doctors in real-time, improving both response efficiency and patient satisfaction. The innovation doesn’t stop there—it also supports a hybrid communication model, where patients can start their interactions via text before transitioning to live calls with full context carried forward.

Another intriguing presentation covered strategies to reduce the cost of running compute-heavy generative AI models. One company showcased how to optimize cloud usage by identifying patterns in AWS server pricing—like running workloads during off-peak times such as Saturday nights—to save on infrastructure costs without compromising performance.

Looking Ahead

As MEDHOST continues exploring generative AI, especially in partnership with AWS, the goal is clear: streamline provider workflows, improve clinical efficiency, and unlock smarter ways to manage complex healthcare data. By staying connected with peers and pursuing thoughtful innovation, MEDHOST is well-positioned to bring meaningful change to EHR users across the care continuum.
